Since the 1960s, Joel Meyerowitz (b.1938) has been one of the foremost photographic chroniclers of American life, capturing the streets, landscapes and ephemera of his country in colour, with an eye that frequently endows even the most quotidian scenes with mystery and glamour. This show, Between the Dog and the Wolf, brings together around a dozen pictures taken between 1978 and 2007, focusing particularly on images of spaces where land meets water.
The pictures here speak of a very particular kind of mid-century American idea of paradise: we see unusual swimming pool architecture at dawn, faux-colonial style motels, blazing neon signs and palm trees looking as fragile as matchsticks as they teeter around a coastguard watchtower. A shot of the horizon over the sea in Provincetown in Massachusetts becomes a dazzling abstract; a half-dozen peaches laid out on a newspaper are shredded by bands of light and shade.
